5-Ingredient Easy TX Flatbread

Warm fresh flatbread right off the stove is satisfying and tastes amazing! This recipe with very few ingredients comes together in just minutes. It is simple enough for even the most inexperienced beginner. These are lightly fried, giving them a delightful slight crispness with their soft texture. They are excellent served with stew, curry, chili, or any grilled meat. Many people like to sprinkle them with seasoned salt after they are cooked for additional flavor.

5-Ingredient Easy and TX Flatbread

1 Tbsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

1/3 cup olive oil or vegetable oil

1 cup (227g) cold water

3 Tbsp. vegetable oil, additional for frying

  • Place the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl and stir to combine.

  • Add the oil and cold water and mix to make a soft smooth dough. Adjust with flour or water as needed. The dough should be moist but not sticky.

  • Divide the dough into 10 to 12 equal pieces then roll them into balls. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest 10 minutes. Dip each piece in flour, and roll to a rough circle or oval, about 1/4" thick.

  • Preheat a heavy-bottomed skillet on the stovetop. Add 1 tablespoon oil and heat until the oil starts to shimmer in the pan.

  • Fry each flatbread in the hot oil for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Flip and fry on the second side for another 2 minutes. Transfer from the pan to a rack to cool slightly before serving. Add more oil as needed for frying successive batches.

Variation: Add 1 Tbsp. Cumin seed and 1 Tbsp. garlic powder to the dry ingredients for an Indian-style flat bread to serve with curry.
